Sherwin-Williams Jasper SW 6216 is a very dark green, the last color on the strip that starts with Rainwashed SW 6211. It measures with a subtle green undertone that survives even at this depth. An LRV of 4 puts it a step from black, so it reads as a black-green on a wall: black in a dim room, unmistakably green in daylight. It is not the same color as Jasper Stone SW 9133, the mid-tone gray-green three steps up the same strip. Cabinets, exteriors and accent walls are its uses.

Is Jasper warm or cool? Undertones by the numbers

leans green

Undertone

Subtle green

graysaturated

A gentle lean, quiet on the wall.

Jasper is measured green, not neutral: its undertone is a subtle green with a touch of yellow in it. At this depth that is enough to make the wall read as a dark green rather than a black with a cast. Beside white trim and oak the green is obvious and leans toward forest; beside cool gray tile it reads darker and more blue-green. The contrast with the neutral darks is the point of choosing it. Tricorn Black SW 6258 and Iron Ore SW 7069 have no lean, so beside Jasper they read as black and gray and Jasper reads as green. Rock Bottom SW 7062 carries the same green at half the strength. Rookwood Shutter Green SW 2809 is its closest match, a hair bluer; Greenblack SW 6994 is a shade grayer.

Jasper in north, south, east and west light

Jasper swings more with the light than a neutral of the same depth. In a north-facing room it shows more green and less yellow, a cool pine-black, and warm wood or a warm white trim keeps the room from going flat. South light softens it toward a deep sage-black in the afternoon, and east rooms see the widest swing, warm green in the morning and gray-green by evening. West light turns it olive late in the day. Bulbs at 2700K to 3000K keep it on the warm green side; 4000K pushes it gray-green and makes it look colder than the chip.

Watch for

  • In a north room it reads as a cool pine-black; a warm white trim such as Alabaster SW 7008 keeps it from going flat.
  • It is easy to confuse with Jasper Stone SW 9133 when ordering; that one is a medium gray-green, not a dark.
  • Under 4000K bulbs the green turns gray and the room reads colder than it did by day.

Best rooms and surfaces for Jasper

Jasper is a cabinet color first. Kitchen cabinets, an island or a bathroom vanity in it read as a black-green that pairs with white oak, marble, butcher block and brass. The green shows every time daylight crosses a door. On four walls it suits a dining room, study or bedroom with a good window, where it feels like a dark garden rather than a black room. In a small bedroom keep it to the wall behind the bed. A fireplace wall or built-ins in Jasper beside Window Pane SW 6210 or a warm white are easy wins. It sits well with terracotta, leather, brass and plants; with cool blue-gray tile it can look muddy, and a windowless bathroom takes all the green out of it.

Jasper on an exterior

Jasper is rated for exterior use, and outdoors it reads as a deep forest green rather than the black-green of an interior wall, because full sun brings the green forward. It suits a house with cedar, stone, a brown roof or a lot of trees around it. On a front door or shutters it reads dark green from the street against white, cream or gray siding. Trim in Extra White SW 7006 gives a crisp outline; Alabaster SW 7008 is warmer and softer. On a shaded north elevation it goes to near-black, so plan for two looks on one house.

Questions about Jasper

Is Jasper green or black?

Green, as soon as light reaches it. Its measured undertone is a subtle green, and at this depth that reads as a black-green on cabinets and a forest green on a sunlit house. In a dim room or at night it looks black. If you want a dark that stays black, Tricorn Black SW 6258 is the neutral; if you want more green, Pewter Green SW 6208 is lighter and greener.

Is Jasper Stone the same color as Jasper?

No. Jasper Stone SW 9133 is a medium gray-green, an LRV of 32, three steps up the same fan-deck strip; Jasper is the near-black at the bottom of it. The names get mixed up in searches and at the paint counter. Use Jasper Stone for four walls of a light room and Jasper for cabinets, a door or an accent wall.

Is Jasper a good cabinet color?

Yes, and it is the most common way to use it indoors. On cabinet doors Jasper reads as a black-green that shows its green whenever daylight crosses it, and it pairs with white oak, marble and brass.
