Sherwin-Williams Aesthetic White SW 7035 is a pale greige white, the gray side of the warm whites rather than the cream side. It has an LRV of 73, light enough to brighten a room while still reading as a soft color against white trim. Our method reads it as a subtle yellow-beige, warm by a small margin. Sherwin-Williams lists it as the coordinating white for Accessible Beige SW 7036. People use it on living room and bedroom walls where a plain white feels stark.

Subtle yellow-beige

A gentle lean, quiet on the wall.

Aesthetic White measures as a faint yellow warmed by the barest trace of red, so diluted that gray is what most people see first. Beside a crisp white trim such as Pure White SW 7005 it reads as a light greige, not a cream. Beside warm wood it warms up and looks like a soft white. On a gray tile floor or against cool quartz that trace of red can show as a faint pink or putty cast. Shoji White SW 7042 has the same lean with more cream in it. City Loft SW 7631 and Egret White SW 7570 are the same greige a few points deeper. You need a chip of each to tell them apart.

Aesthetic White in north, south, east and west light

Aesthetic White is one of the safer warm whites for a north-facing room, because it is already halfway to gray. Cool light deepens it into a soft light greige rather than turning it dull, and a wood floor keeps its warmth. In a south room it goes creamier and lighter, nearly a warm white by afternoon. East rooms show a little more cream at breakfast, west rooms a little more at sunset. Bulbs at 2700K to 3000K keep it true. At 4000K the gray takes over and it can read faintly lilac beside white trim.

Watch for

  • Under 4000K bulbs or beside cool white tile it can pick up a faint pink or lilac cast
  • In a bright south room by afternoon it reads closer to a warm white than a greige
  • Beside Alabaster SW 7008 trim it looks gray; beside Pure White SW 7005 trim it looks warm

Best rooms and surfaces for Aesthetic White

Aesthetic White is a wall color for people who find Alabaster SW 7008 too creamy and Agreeable Gray SW 7029 too dark. It gives an open plan a soft, lived-in white that still reads as a color at the edges. It is the wall to put behind cabinets in Accessible Beige SW 7036 or a warm wood, since Sherwin-Williams built that pairing. As a cabinet color itself it is too close to white to read as a decision, and it needs a clearly darker wall. In a bathroom with cool white tile it looks dingy. On an accent wall it does nothing; it is a background color, and it is at its best when the whole room wears it.

Aesthetic White on an exterior

Aesthetic White appears on the Sherwin-Williams top exterior colors list. In full sun it reads as a soft white with the gray gone, a step calmer than Extra White SW 7006 on the same house. On a shaded wall and under an overhang the greige comes back and the siding looks like pale putty. It suits stone, brick and a dark roof. Pure White SW 7005 on the trim gives contrast; Aesthetic White carried onto the trim gives a one-color house. A black door such as Tricorn Black SW 6258 sets it off.

Aesthetic White vs Shoji White SW 7042

Aesthetic White is a touch darker; both have a subtle yellow-beige undertone.

Shoji White SW 7042 is a point lighter at an LRV of 74 and has more cream in it. Shoji White reads as a warm off-white where Aesthetic White reads as a pale greige. The two share a lean, and on a sample board the gap is small. In a room with warm wood, Shoji White is the cozier pick. In a room with gray floors or a lot of white, Aesthetic White is the one that never turns yellow.

Aesthetic White vs Alabaster SW 7008

Aesthetic White is noticeably darker; both have a subtle yellow-beige undertone.

Alabaster SW 7008 is nine points lighter at an LRV of 82 and is a cream-leaning white, not a greige. Next to it Aesthetic White looks like a distinct pale gray-beige and Alabaster looks like white. Pick Alabaster for walls that should read white, or as trim against darker walls. Pick Aesthetic White for walls that should read as a soft color, with Pure White SW 7005 as the trim.

Egret White SW 7570 has the same lean and sits three points darker at an LRV of 70. They are close enough that most people cannot separate them on a wall. Egret White is the slightly deeper, slightly grayer of the two. Take Egret White for a bright room that can afford a little more depth. Take Aesthetic White for a darker room or a lower ceiling, where the extra light matters.

Aesthetic White vs Accessible Beige SW 7036

Aesthetic White is much lighter; undertone subtle yellow-beige vs noticeable yellow-beige.

Accessible Beige SW 7036 is not an alternative to Aesthetic White but its partner: 15 points darker at an LRV of 58 and clearly beige. Sherwin-Williams lists Aesthetic White as the white to run with it. Put Accessible Beige on the walls and Aesthetic White on the trim, or Accessible Beige on cabinets and Aesthetic White on the walls behind them. Pick one of them alone only when the room needs a single quiet neutral.

Questions about Aesthetic White

Does Aesthetic White look pink or gray?

Both, depending on the company it keeps. Aesthetic White has a faint yellow lean and a trace of red, and very little color overall. It reads gray beside a cream and warm beside a cool white. The pink cast people mention shows under cool 4000K bulbs, against cool white tile or next to a green-leaning gray. With warm wood, brass and 2700K to 3000K bulbs it reads as a soft greige white.

Is Aesthetic White good for a living room?

Yes, and that is where it is used most. It is light enough to keep a big room bright and gray enough that a wall of it does not read as unpainted white. It works with white or greige sofas, oak floors and black or brass metal. Give it Pure White SW 7005 on the trim and ceiling. Keep the rug and sofa clearly lighter or darker than the walls so the room has contrast.

Is Aesthetic White good for a bedroom?

It makes a calm bedroom, more so than a brighter white, because its bit of gray softens the light at night. Under warm lamps the walls read as a quiet warm white. In a north-facing bedroom it settles into a soft greige, which many people prefer to a white that has gone flat. Pair it with white bedding for contrast or greige bedding for a tone-on-tone room.

What colors go with Aesthetic White?

Sherwin-Williams puts Pure White SW 7005 on its trim and ceilings. Its listed accents are Chelsea Gray SW 2850 and Aquaverde SW 9051, a mid gray and a soft blue-green. It is also the white Sherwin-Williams lists for Accessible Beige SW 7036. Beyond the list it suits oak and walnut, black window frames and brass. A deep green such as Evergreen Fog SW 9130 holds against it on a door or an island.

What is one shade lighter or darker than Aesthetic White?

On its fan-deck strip the nearest step lighter is Heron Plume SW 6070, two points up and a touch cleaner. The nearest step darker is City Loft SW 7631, three points down and a touch grayer. Among its closest matches, Sunbleached SW 9585 sits two points lighter and is the nearest twin. Egret White SW 7570 is three points darker with the same lean.
