Sherwin-Williams Cyberspace SW 7076 is a near-black gray with a faint blue lean, the coolest-looking of the dark neutrals without being a blue. With an LRV of 6 it reads as a soft black on most walls and as a blue-tinged charcoal only where daylight is strong. It anchors the strip that begins with Gray Screen SW 7071, a run of clean, slightly cool grays. Exteriors, cabinets and bedrooms are its common uses, and Iron Ore SW 7069 is the color people weigh it against.

Is Cyberspace warm or cool? Undertones by the numbers

WarmGreenCool

too close to gray to lean

Undertone

Faint blue

graysaturated

Barely off gray.

Cyberspace measures neutral in temperature with a faint blue undertone: enough blue to register in the numbers, too little to call the color blue. In practice the blue is visible only by contrast. Against a warm white trim or an oak floor the walls take on a steel cast; against cool tile, chrome or a gray-white they read as plain charcoal. Iron Ore SW 7069 is the closest page color and the cleanest way to see the lean. It is a true neutral, a hair darker, and next to Cyberspace it looks slightly warm and brown. Tricorn Black SW 6258 is blacker and just as neutral. The real blues nearby, Sea Serpent SW 7615 and Charcoal Blue SW 2739, carry about twice the blue and read as navy-black; Cyberspace stops short of that.

Cyberspace in north, south, east and west light

Cyberspace is steadiest in south and west rooms, where warm afternoon light cancels the faint blue and leaves a clean charcoal. A north-facing room does the opposite: cool north light adds to the blue already there, and the walls read as a steel-blue black, darker and cooler than the chip. That can be the point in a moody bedroom or office, but sample it on the wall opposite the window first. East rooms show the blue in the morning and lose it by afternoon. Bulbs at 2700K to 3000K pull it back to neutral; 4000K makes the blue plain.

Watch for

  • North light stacks onto its blue lean, so a north room reads steel-blue rather than charcoal.
  • Next to a warm white like Alabaster SW 7008 the blue shows more than it does beside a gray-white.
  • Under 4000K bulbs the blue becomes obvious; warm lamps keep it charcoal at night.

Best rooms and surfaces for Cyberspace

Cyberspace suits rooms meant to feel cool and quiet: a bedroom, a home office, a media room, a powder room with a window. On all four walls it reads as a soft blue-black that flatters chrome, nickel, marble and light gray floors and makes a white bed or desk stand out. On kitchen cabinets it gives a charcoal with a hint of steel that pairs with white quartz, stainless appliances and a light backsplash. With warm wood counters and brass it can look mismatched. Interior doors and a fireplace wall in it are easy wins beside Site White SW 7070 or another gray-white. Skip it in a windowless bathroom and in rooms built around orange oak, where the faint blue and the warm wood pull against each other.

Cyberspace on an exterior

Cyberspace is in the Top Exterior Colors collection, and outdoors it reads as a dark charcoal with a cool cast rather than a black. Full sun lightens it and brings out a touch of the blue, so a whole house in it looks steel-gray by day and near-black at dusk. The shaded elevations hold closer to the chip. It suits a house with a gray or slate roof, Extra White SW 7006 trim, and stone or concrete rather than red brick. On a front door it gives a black with a cool edge that works against white, gray and pale blue siding.

Cyberspace vs Iron Ore SW 7069

Cyberspace is a touch lighter; undertone faint blue vs none (a true neutral).

Iron Ore SW 7069 is a hair darker, an LRV of 6 for both once rounded, and it is a true neutral where Cyberspace carries a faint blue. On a wall the two are the same depth with a different mood: Iron Ore is charcoal, Cyberspace is charcoal with a cool edge. Pick Iron Ore for a scheme with warm wood, brick or brass. Pick Cyberspace with chrome, marble, gray floors and a slate roof, where its blue reads as intended.

Cyberspace vs Peppercorn SW 7674

Cyberspace is noticeably darker; undertone faint blue vs none (a true neutral).

Peppercorn SW 7674 is noticeably lighter, an LRV of 10 against 6, and a true neutral with no lean. It reads as a clear charcoal gray; Cyberspace reads as a near-black with a cool cast. Pick Peppercorn for walls that should stay visibly gray in an ordinary room. Pick Cyberspace when the room should feel darker and cooler, or when the rest of the palette is blue-gray and a neutral would look warm beside it.

Cyberspace vs Sea Serpent SW 7615

Cyberspace is a touch darker; undertone faint blue vs subtle blue.

Sea Serpent SW 7615 is a close relative at the same depth, an LRV of 7, with about twice the blue. It measures cool with a subtle blue undertone, and on a wall it reads as a navy-black. Cyberspace only hints at blue. Choose Sea Serpent when you want a dark that is clearly blue, on cabinets or a front door. Choose Cyberspace when you want charcoal that leans cool without being called blue.

Questions about Cyberspace

Does Cyberspace look blue?

Slightly, and only by contrast. It measures a faint blue, far less than a navy, so beside a gray-white it reads as plain charcoal. Next to a warm white, an oak floor or in a north-facing room the blue shows as a steel cast. If you want a dark with no blue at all, Iron Ore SW 7069 is the neutral at the same depth.

What colors go with Cyberspace?

For trim and ceilings Sherwin-Williams pairs it with Site White SW 7070, and it names Network Gray SW 7073 and Shell White SW 8917 as accents. Network Gray is the mid-gray from the same strip and makes an easy two-tone scheme. Beyond paint it suits marble, white quartz, light gray floors, chrome and nickel. Gray Screen SW 7071, the lightest color on its strip, works on the surrounding walls.

Is Cyberspace a good cabinet color?

Yes, in a kitchen with cool materials. On cabinets it reads as a charcoal with a hint of steel and sits well with white quartz, marble, stainless steel and a white or pale gray backsplash. With butcher block, warm stone and brass it can look mismatched. Give the doors a satin finish and keep the walls light so the room does not close in.

Is Cyberspace good for a bedroom?

Yes, if the room has a real window. On all four walls it makes a bedroom feel cool, quiet and enclosed, and its faint blue reads as calm rather than cold under warm bedside lamps. In a north-facing bedroom expect a steel-blue black, darker than the chip. If that is too much, paint the wall behind the bed and keep the rest in Site White SW 7070.

What is one shade lighter than Cyberspace?

Web Gray SW 7075 is the next color up on the fan-deck strip, a clear jump from an LRV of 6 to 13 that reads as a mid-dark cool gray. Cyberspace is the darkest on its strip, so the darker steps come from elsewhere: Iron Ore SW 7069, then Tricorn Black SW 6258. For a smaller step up, Sea Mariner SW 9640 among its closest matches is a near twin, a hair lighter.
