Benjamin Moore Beach Glass 1564 is a muted green-gray with a cool, watery cast, one step deeper than the pale spa colors it is usually shortlisted against. An LRV of 50 puts it midway between light and dark, so it reads clearly as a color and still leaves a room open. Our method reads it as a subtle green, and bathrooms and bedrooms take most of its use.

Subtle green

A gentle lean, quiet on the wall.

Measured, Beach Glass has a clear but small amount of green, with just enough yellow behind it to stop the green reading blue. It is greener than it looks on a chip and grayer than it looks on a wall, which is the usual complaint about it. Clean white trim sharpens the green, while a cream trim leaves it dull and faintly olive. Warm wood floors and rattan bring out the sage side; marble, glass tile and chrome swing it toward aqua. Iced Marble 1578 is the near relative with less green in it, and Wedgewood Gray HC-146 the one that leans blue.

Beach Glass in north, south, east and west light

A north-facing room turns Beach Glass grayer and cooler and takes some of the green with it, which is the main reason people say the color looks nothing like the store; it still holds up there better than a paler green would. South light warms it into a soft sage, best in the afternoon. East rooms give the widest swing, sage early and gray-green late. West rooms stay gray until the sun drops and then turn faintly olive. Bulbs at 2700K to 3000K keep the sage, and anything cooler leaves the gray in charge.

Watch for

  • Loses most of its green under cool white bulbs at night
  • Looks olive rather than sage beside cream or yellow-beige trim
  • Deepens noticeably on a shaded wall, so sample two walls in the same room

Best rooms and surfaces for Beach Glass

Bathrooms suit Beach Glass best: it stays clean against white tile, keeps enough depth to be a color rather than a wash, and looks right with chrome or brushed nickel. Bedrooms are the other common use, where it makes a quiet room without the chill a blue would bring. It is strong enough for all four walls of a small room, and it holds a hallway that only gets borrowed light. Against a warm beige carpet or a yellow-toned oak floor it looks off, closer to olive than sage. On a ceiling it is too much unless the walls are white and the room is generous.

Beach Glass on an exterior

Benjamin Moore sells Beach Glass for exterior use, and it works on cottages, porches and shutters more readily than on a whole large house. In full sun the green nearly disappears and it reads as a pale gray; in shade and on north elevations it holds the color and looks several shades deeper. That gap is worth checking with a painted board before committing. Super White OC-152 or Snow White OC-66 keeps the trim crisp, and Midnight Blue 1638, one of Benjamin Moore's own picks with it, is the door color that finishes the front.

Sea Glass

Beach Glass vs Sea Glass CSP-735

Beach Glass is much lighter; both have a subtle green undertone.

Sea Glass CSP-735 is the color people mix this one up with, and the names are all they share. Sea Glass measures sixteen points darker, a mid-depth green-gray that reads as a definite color on a wall, while Beach Glass stays light enough to keep a bathroom bright. If a Beach Glass sample looked washed out to you, Sea Glass is probably the color you were reaching for.

Beach Glass vs Quiet Moments 1563

Beach Glass is much darker; both have a subtle green undertone.

Quiet Moments 1563 is the rung above on the same Benjamin Moore ladder, and the extra eleven points of light take some of the green with them. In a room with one small window Quiet Moments holds the brightness better. In a room with good daylight Beach Glass keeps its color where Quiet Moments can fade toward gray. The two are near enough that nobody needs both in one house.

Beach Glass vs Palladian Blue HC-144

Beach Glass is much darker; both have a subtle green undertone.

Palladian Blue HC-144 is a good ten points lighter and swings blue where Beach Glass holds green, so these read as two different colors rather than two versions of one. Palladian Blue is the choice for a bathroom meant to feel airy. Beach Glass is the one that sits quietly with wood and stone, and the safer pick if there is any warmth in the floors.

Beach Glass vs Quietude SW 6212

Beach Glass is a touch lighter; both have a subtle green undertone.

Quietude SW 6212 is the nearest Sherwin-Williams color with a page here and sits two points darker, with a little more blue inside the green. On a wall the two are hard to separate. The difference shows on cabinet doors, where Quietude looks slightly cooler. Either can do the same job, so the choice usually comes down to the brand your painter already buys.

Questions about Beach Glass

Does Beach Glass look green or blue?

Green, with a cool edge that some people read as blue. The measurement puts green well ahead, held back by a little yellow, so in warm light it is sage and in cool light it is gray-green. True blue only shows next to something warm, such as a cream trim or an orange-toned oak floor, which pushes the eye the other way.

What colors go with Beach Glass?

Benjamin Moore pairs it with Snow White OC-66, Super White OC-152, the cream Man on the Moon OC-106 and the near-black Midnight Blue 1638. In practice it takes white oak, rattan, linen, and either nickel or brass. Navy and charcoal are the accents that hold. Strong beige and gold-toned wood are the ones that make it look olive.

Is Beach Glass a good cabinet color?

Yes, particularly on a vanity or an island rather than a whole kitchen. At this depth doors read as a definite green-gray against a white counter, and the color hides marks better than a pale green would. In a kitchen with warm oak floors it can tip olive, so hold a painted door against the floor and the counter before ordering.

What is one shade darker than Beach Glass?

Mount Saint Anne 1565, the next rung down in Benjamin Moore's own set, eight points darker and a shade bluer. The rung above is Quiet Moments 1563. If you want a smaller step than either, Iced Marble 1578 measures a couple of points darker with less green in it, and Tranquility AF-490 a few points lighter.
